Lime Plaster
At Barber & Company, one of the main services that we provide, is that of lime plastering and rendering.

Lime has been used as a building material for thousands of years, for its many fantastic properties. It is a versatile, flexible, breathable material, that has stood the test of time. Unfortunately, in The UK, we lost our way a bit with the discovery of Portland cement in the 18th century. At the time, this "wonder material" was seen as a one fits all solution for the building industry, however Portland cement is a death sentence for traditionally built structures. Why is that, you may ask. in simple terms, Portland cement doesn't allow the transfer of moisture. it traps moisture and doesn't allow it to escape, which ultimately leads to the destruction and rot of timber frames, clay lump, cob, solid masonry, and lime.

Lime, however, is a vapour permeable material, which regulates its self. It will absorb moisture, and then release it back into the atmosphere when conditions are suitable, thus allowing buildings to "breathe"

Not only is lime the appropriate binder for plasters and mortars for traditionally built properties but it is an aesthetically pleasing material. Whether its a chalk and lime mixed plaster, with its natural undulations and textures, or a ruled and floated sand and lime mix, suitable for Georgian and Regency buildings, it is a beautiful product to use and live with.
